How many guests fit at a table?
A 60 in (152 cm) round table seats 8 comfortably and 10 at most. An 8 ft banquet table also seats 8 comfortably and 10 at most. Below are the sizes in inches and cm, how much room each guest needs, and how to work out how many tables your guest count requires.
How many people fit at each table size?
“Comfortable” is a seated dinner with place settings and a centerpiece. “Maximum” is the most chairs you can fit: guests sit close, and not everyone can push a chair under the table. Sources differ by a seat or two, so the ranges below combine three of them: a restaurant-supply guide, a party rental guide and a seating planner’s guide (all checked 2 November 2026).
| Table | Size (in) | Size (cm) | Comfortable | Maximum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round, 4 ft | 48 | 122 | 4 to 6 | 6 to 8 |
| Round, 5 ft | 60 | 152 | 8 | 10 |
| Round, 5.5 ft | 66 | 168 | 8 to 9 | 10 |
| Round, 6 ft | 72 | 183 | 10 | 12 |
| Rectangular, 6 ft | 30 × 72 | 76 × 183 | 6 | 8 |
| Rectangular, 8 ft | 30 × 96 | 76 × 244 | 8 | 10 |
The 60 in round is the usual wedding table. Eight guests have room for a full place setting and a centerpiece; ten works for a simpler meal, but expect elbows to touch.
How much space does each guest need?
Plan 24 in (60 cm) of table edge per guest as the minimum and 30 in (76 cm) for a relaxed plated dinner (Seatplan). Then leave room around the tables:
- Between tables: about 54 in (137 cm) between round tables and 60 in (152 cm) between rectangular ones, so chairs can pull out (Reventals). Seatplan also uses 60 in between table edges.
- Main aisles: at least 36 in (91 cm) wide, the minimum for wheelchairs and walkers (WebstaurantStore).
- Floor area: WebstaurantStore gives 10 to 11 sq ft (about 1 m²) per person for banquet service, before a dance floor.
- Long meals: seat fewer than the maximum. For multi-course dinners, take the next larger table.
How many tables do I need for my guest count?
- Count everyone who needs a seat: guests, plus-ones, children, and vendors who eat (photographer, DJ).
- Pick the seats per table. Use the comfortable number, not the maximum.
- Tables = guests divided by seats per table, rounded up.
- Add a head table or sweetheart table if you want one. It is separate from the guest tables.
Example: 120 guests at 10 seats per table need 12 tables. At 8 seats per table they need 15, so three more tables to fit into the room. If 8 of the 120 sit at a head table, the other 112 need 12 tables at 10 seats (112 / 10 = 11.2, rounded up) plus the head table.
Leave a few spare seats for late additions. In that example, 12 tables of 10 hold 120 for 112 guests, which leaves 8 free chairs to spread across the tables.
How Seating Solver handles table sizes
In the Tables step you create round, square or long tables and set the seats for each, from 2 to 20. You can add many identical tables at once, or single ones such as a longer head table. The automatic seating fills the tables up to the seats you set and keeps guests who should sit together at the same table. It does not know a table’s physical size, so enter the number of chairs your venue or rental company gives you.
